Controlling a PC from your phone: what works and what does not

A phone can control a computer remotely, but not equally well for everything. What genuinely works, what is painful, and what to look at before choosing.

Yes, it works: the phone in your pocket can take control of a computer anywhere. The part nobody mentions is that it works very well for some things and is genuinely painful for others — and the difference has nothing to do with the app. It is the physics of the screen.

What works surprisingly well

Quick checks. Has the job finished? Did the service fall over? Is there an error dialog waiting? Open, look, close. Under a minute, and exactly the case where the phone beats the laptop: it is already in your hand.

Restarting something. A service, a stuck application, the machine itself. A few clicks, nothing to type.

Pressing a button you were expecting. Confirmations, dialogs, a "Yes" in an installer.

Saving an open file before something closes it. A Ctrl+S sent from a phone has rescued more hours of work than anyone would admit.

What is painful

Writing anything long. The on-screen keyboard covers half of a screen that was small to begin with, so you are now looking at a quarter of the desktop. Fine for a password. Not for a paragraph.

Precise text work — placing the cursor between two characters, selecting exactly the right thing. A fingertip is roughly an 8-millimetre instrument aimed at a 2-pixel target.

Applications built from small elements — dense tables, developer tools, anything with cascading menus. You end up zooming in, losing your place, and zooming back out.

Long sessions. They work, but twenty minutes in you realise it would have been faster to go and get the laptop.

The practical conclusion: a phone is excellent as an intervention, poor as a workplace.

The details that actually matter

If you are choosing what to do this with, three things matter more than any feature list:

How touch becomes mouse. There are two approaches. One puts the cursor where you touched — direct, but imprecise. The other treats the screen as a trackpad: you move your finger, the cursor moves relative to where it was, you tap to click. The second is far more accurate and is the only one that lets you hit small targets. Make sure it exists.

What happens to keys your phone keyboard does not have. Ctrl, Alt, Esc, F5, arrow keys — none of them are on a phone keyboard. Without a dedicated bar of special keys, a whole category of operations becomes impossible rather than merely awkward.

What happens when you leave the app. If the session dies every time you check something else on the phone, you have lost half the point of being on a phone. A picture-in-picture mode — the session staying in a corner while you look elsewhere — changes how you use this entirely.

What a phone does not solve

Anything to do with the network. If you assumed that being on mobile data sidesteps the connection problems, it does not. Mobile connections almost always sit behind CGNAT, which makes them harder to reach directly, not easier. In short

Treat it as a tool for quick intervention, not as a laptop replacement. With that expectation it is one of the more useful things to have on a phone — particularly if you look after machines that tend to demand attention exactly when you are not at your desk.
